After four years of dedicated service as our President, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Tanja Spanic, whose mandate has now come to an end. We were honored to be led by such a remarkable lady: she significantly contributed to Europa Donna’s advocacy work and good reputation, achieving notable successes during very difficult times. Tanja’s commitment to our cause remains steadfast as she will continue to serve as a Board Member. We eagerly anticipate witnessing her continued dedication and impact in this new capacity.

At the same time, we are thrilled to announce and extend our warm congratulations to our new President, Stella Mastora, hailing from Europa Donna Cyprus. We wish her a mandate filled with success and progress. We are confident that, akin to Tanja and all our esteemed past presidents, Stella will bring a high level of commitment and dedication to our organization.

The EBCC Manifesto sets out key principles and recommendations on how to maximise the impact of multidisciplinary breast cancer care. The EBCC-13 Manifesto focuses on “How to control the ‘epidemic’ of contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM)”.

During the spring of 2022, EUROPA DONNA – The European Breast Cancer Coalition undertook a survey project to provide a snapshot of the current state of breast services in Europe from the perspective of patient advocacy organisations, with respect to their experiences as advocates regarding COVID-19 and breast cancer. This project follows a survey carried out in September 2020 covering the state of breast services in Europe which had a section dedicated to COVID. The goal was to gain a better understanding of how the breast cancer landscape has changed and where European countries stand now, following what for many countries has been more than two years of disruption and instability as consequences of the pandemic.

21 November 2022 – Barcelona, Spain – The 13th European Breast Cancer Conference (EBCC13) welcomed more than 1725 participants from some 78 countries, with almost 1450 people with an interest in breast cancer attending in person from 16-18 November in Barcelona, Spain. Europa Donna advocates participated in and chaired scientific sessions as well as Europa Donna sessions on survivorship, COVID-19, and European policy.

Europa Donna Breast Cancer Advocacy Leader Conference: Building our Organisations for the Future 24 September 2022

September flew by so quickly!

We were very busy preparing for the biannual Breast Cancer Advocacy Leader Conference, which took place on 24 September in Milan. In the end we can proudly say that it was a success, with 45 leaders from 26 of the Coalition’s member countries participating in our first in-person meeting since the outbreak of the pandemic.

The morning session was opened by our President Tanja Spanic, and guests were pleased to watch a powerful video message from French MEP Veronique Trillet-Lenoir highlighting the urgent need to address inequalities in breast cancer and introducing the Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan (EBCP)’s ambitious goals, such as detecting risk factors, improving health literacy, providing increased support to patients and improving quality of life for cancer patients. The EBCP was later covered in more detail by ED CEO Marzia Zambon and Prof. Tit Albreht (National Institute of Public Health, Slovenia), who presented on implementation of the outputs of the cancer control Joint Actions in EU Member States, followed by Prof. Fabrice André (Gustave Roussy Cancer Center, France), who gave an interesting and clear lecture on genetics, genomics and personalised treatment, and then Dr. Olivia Pagani, who discussed why and how patient advocates should seek involvement in research and clinical trials.

The afternoon session was dedicated to further explanation of the European Commission Initiative on Breast Cancer (ECIBC), presented by representatives of the European Commission Joint Research Centre. We took the opportunity to announce that Marzia Zambon, ED’s Executive Director, has been selected to be part of the ECIBC’s Quality Assurance Scheme (Congratulations!). After that, we had a fruitful session of interactive workshops to exchange fresh ideas on fundraising, implementing EU breast cancer policy at the national level, and participating in research and clinical trials.

It was a real satisfaction to see all these incredible dedicated people assembled to advance best practice in breast cancer advocacy!

21 June 2022– Europa Donna – The European Breast Cancer Coalition held a webinar on metastatic breast cancer (MBC) advocacy for women to learn more and share strategies to advocate with and for other women with this disease. Twenty-nine participants from 14 of the Coalition’s 47 member countries connected on this virtual course on 17 and 18 June, which covered topics ranging from MBC treatments to patient-doctor communication and the financial impact of MBC. This was the third virtual conference since the Coalition began holding yearly MBC conferences and training in 2017 to address the unmet needs of women with MBC, which is an advocacy priority for the Coalition.
